A Brief History Of Quad Bike Racing

Most Quad Bike racing can take place on most terrains, mainly because the Quad bike is a originated as the ‘All Terrain Vehicle’ or ‘ATV’. But the ATV only had three wheels and was originally referred to as the ‘Trike’.

The Trike’s use in racing turned out to not be a stable ride and this is probably why the development of the Quad Bike took place in America. This was first noted as a conversion of the trike into the Quad by the removal of the lone front wheel, The welding of a subframe on to the forks of the trike and the hanging Track Rods, Hubs, A Arms, Steering Column and a Pair of wheels also helped to create it.

From the start Trikes and Quads have had three c.c. criterias and have two stroke, engines, other than the 350cc Yamaha Banshee, based on the popular 350LC road bike, which uses a very fast two stroke twin cylinder engine. most others have 250cc and 100cc single cylinder two stokes.

Growing classes became increasingly popular at quad bike events and there has been talk of a four stroke class in the future. This sport is as common as others, in the fact that second hand machines are readily available. Also British Quad manufacturers build complete Quads to order and provide conversions for Solo motocross bikes and even old Trikes.

Second hand racing Quads, can cost anything from £600, and brand new quads can cost around £5000.

Quad bike racing takes place over many disciplines including: Grass Track, Super Moto, Ice Speedway, Road Racing, Enduros, Hill Climbs, Drag/Sprint, Moto Cross, Desert and Beach Racing and Speedway. The greatest aspect of the quad is that is so versatile and with very few modifications, can be ready for literally any terrain.

Some international sports stars like Colin McRae were known to own Quads and have been noted to ride them on a regular basis.
